STRENGHTENING PREVENTION ALONG WEST AND CENTRAL AFRICAN MIGRATORY ROUTES |
Because of the link between the increase in population mobility and the spread of HIV/AIDS in West Africa AWARE-HIV/AIDS is working with countries and regional programs to reduce high-risk behaviors and HIV transmission among vulnerable, mobile populations. AWARE-HIV/AIDS' Cross Border program is called Projet de Prévention du SIDA sur les Axes Migratoires de l'Afrique de l'Ouest/de l'Afrique Centrale (PSAMAO/PSAMAC). This initiative was started under the previous USAID/WARP Family Health and AIDS (FHA) project which covered four countries (Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire and Togo) and it is being expanded under the current project based on its success. Under the PSAMAO/PSAMAC program, AWARE-HIV/AIDS is collaborating with countries in the region and regional organizations in the establishment of cross-border sites, where behavior change communication (BCC) activities are implemented to promote the adoption of safe and responsible sexual behaviors among truck drivers, sex workers, and communities along the migratory routes. In addition to BCC activities, AWARE-HIV/AIDS supports local health care providers to offer prevention and care for sexually transmitted infection (STI), family planning services, and promote voluntary counseling and testing (VCT). |
